Social Media Management in Birmingham: What It Costs, What’s Included and How to Choose an Agency (2026)

Social Media Management in Birmingham: What It Costs, What’s Included and How to Choose an Agency (2026)

The short answer: Social media management in Birmingham typically costs £200 to £600 a month for organic posting on one or two platforms, £600 to £1,500 for content-led work with original photography and video, and £1,500 or more when paid social and community management are included. These are observed market ranges rather than published data, and ad spend is always separate from the fee.

Typical UK monthly fees for social media management: £200 to £600 starter organic, £600 to £1,500 content-led, £1,500 upwards full management, ad spend always separate

Key takeaways

  • A monthly fee usually buys strategy, content, scheduling and reporting. Video, photography, influencer fees and ad spend are extra.
  • One Birmingham provider publishes organic packages from £149 to £549 a month plus VAT, as of October 2026.
  • Ofcom put UK online adult reach in May 2025 at 93% for Facebook and Messenger, 78% for Instagram, 56% for TikTok and 38% for LinkedIn.
  • Posting the same content on every platform is a common and costly mistake for a small business.
  • Guaranteed follower counts are a red flag, and fake or concealed incentivised reviews have been banned in the UK since 6 April 2025.

What does social media management actually include?

Social media management is the ongoing job of planning, making, publishing and measuring content on social platforms for a business. It covers very different amounts of work, so compare scopes before prices.

ElementUsually includedUsually extra
Strategy and planningChannel choice, content pillars, a monthly calendarFull brand or audience research
Content creationGraphics from your existing brand assets, written captionsPhoto shoots, filmed video, animation
PublishingScheduling, posting, hashtag and link setupOut of hours or live event posting
Community managementReplying to comments and messages in UK business hoursEvenings, weekends, complaint handling
ReportingMonthly reach, engagement and follower reportEnquiry attribution, call tracking, CRM links
Paid socialNothing, unless statedAd management fee, ad creative, your ad spend

What is the difference between content-only and full management?

Content-only means an agency makes posts and hands them over for you to publish. Full management means they also publish, reply to comments and messages, and report. Content-only is cheaper and suits businesses with someone in house who posts reliably. Either way, ask how many original pieces you get each month and whether video is included, because video is where the cost sits.

How much does social media management cost in Birmingham?

Social media management in Birmingham runs from £200 to £600 a month for simple organic posting (unpaid posts, no ad budget), £600 to £1,500 for content-led management, and £1,500 upwards for full management including paid social. These are typical market ranges rather than a price list, and every agency defines its tiers differently.

For a published example, Nettl of Birmingham lists its prices publicly: organic packages from £149 a month for 8 posts on one channel to £549 for 28 posts per channel across three channels, excluding VAT, on a three month minimum then 30 day rolling. Ads management is separate, at £150 to £450. One provider as of October 2026, not a market average, but it shows how packages are built: posts per channel, per month.

TierTypical monthly feeWhat it usually buysBest for
Starter organic£200 to £6008 to 16 posts on one or two platforms, graphics from existing assets, a basic reportShops, cafes and trades
Content-led£600 to £1,500Original photography or short video, 12 to 20 posts, stories or reels, replies in business hoursHospitality, retail, clinics
Full management£1,500 upwardsStrategy, original video, paid social, community management, reporting tied to enquiriesSocial as a real sales channel
Freelancer£250 to £900Usually one person posting and doing light designOwners who can brief well
In houseSalary plus toolsFull control, but you also pay for software, cover and trainingDaily posting across several platforms

Does the fee include ad spend?

No, a management fee should not include ad spend. The fee pays for people’s time; the spend goes to Meta, LinkedIn or TikTok. Keeping them separate lets you see your true cost per enquiry and change budget without renegotiating.

A worked example: two Birmingham businesses, same £800 a month

The same budget buys very different plans. Assumptions: both spend £800 a month in total, both have a website and logo, neither has in-house video, VAT excluded.

Which platforms should a Birmingham business actually use?

Use the one or two platforms where your buyers already spend time. Reach is a starting point; what decides it is whether people buy after seeing you there. Ofcom’s Online Nation 2025 report (PDF), published on 10 December 2025 using Ipsos iris data for May 2025, measured UK online adult reach and daily time as follows (Figure 22).

PlatformUK online adult reach, May 2025Daily time per userUsually suits
YouTube94%51 minutesExplainers, long sales cycles
Facebook and Messenger93%43 minutesLocal services, trades, events
Instagram78%20 minutesHospitality, retail, beauty
TikTok56%28 minutes, 49 among 18 to 34sYounger, personality-led brands
X39%, down from 45% a year earlier6 minutesNews-led and B2B commentary
LinkedIn38%2 minutesB2B, recruitment, professional services

Read the time column as carefully as the reach column. LinkedIn reaches 38% of UK online adults but holds them two minutes a day, so it rewards a few well-made posts, not daily filler.

Why is posting on every platform a mistake?

One budget spread across five platforms produces five thin feeds instead of one good one, and cross-posting the same square graphic everywhere makes a business look automated rather than active. There is a second cost people forget: every live account is an inbox, so one nobody monitors becomes a channel where customers are visibly ignored.

What about paid social minimums?

The platforms set floors. TikTok Ads Manager requires a daily budget above $50 at campaign level and above $20 at ad group level, with local currency equivalents applied. LinkedIn sets a minimum lifetime budget based on campaign duration, shown in Campaign Manager if yours is too low. Meta is more flexible, which is one reason small local budgets start there. Our comparison of Google Ads and Meta ads in 2026 covers where each budget works harder.

10 questions to ask before you hire a social media management agency in Birmingham

Ask all ten and get the answers in writing. Vagueness around ownership, reporting or notice periods tells you something.

  1. Who owns the accounts? Your business should own the Facebook Page, Instagram account, Meta business portfolio, LinkedIn Page and ad account, with the agency an admin you can remove.
  2. Who owns the content afterwards? Get it in writing that finished graphics, photos and video are yours.
  3. How many original pieces per month? Ask for the number and the split between static and video.
  4. What is the approval process? A calendar sent a week before the month starts is normal; approving posts the morning they go out is not.
  5. How fast do you reply to comments and messages? Get a stated response time and the days it covers.
  6. What does the monthly report show? Reach and follower growth are not enough. Ask for enquiries, message conversations and clicks to key pages.
  7. Is ad spend separate from your fee? It should be, billed to your card on your own ad account.
  8. Contract length and notice period? Three months then monthly rolling is common; twelve months with no break clause is worth questioning.
  9. Who actually does the work? Ask who writes and designs, not just the account manager.
  10. Can we speak to a current client in your sector? A real reference beats a screenshot of a graph.

Two checks take five minutes: look the company up on the Companies House register, and look at the agency’s own social accounts.

What are the red flags?

The four big ones are guaranteed follower numbers, bought engagement, fake or concealed incentivised reviews, and accounts held in the agency’s name. Each costs you reach, money or ownership.

Red flagWhy it is a problem
Guaranteed follower numbersNobody controls a platform’s algorithm. Guarantees are met with bought or incentivised follows, which cut reach because those accounts never engage.
Bought followers, likes or commentsThey inflate the audience and depress the engagement rate, the signal platforms use to decide who sees your posts.
Fake or concealed incentivised reviewsA banned practice in the UK since 6 April 2025. Incentivised reviews are allowed only if the incentive is disclosed. See the GOV.UK guidance on reviews and endorsements.
Accounts held in the agency’s nameIf the relationship ends badly you lose your audience, ad history and pixel data.

One more, less obvious. If an agency runs influencer or creator posts for you, they must be labelled as advertising. The ASA requires marketing communications to be obviously identifiable under Section 2 of the CAP Code and accepts “Ad”, “Advert” or “Ad Feature” placed upfront. Not enough on their own: “Sponsored”, “Gifted” and a discount code by itself. Liability sits with the brand as well as the creator.

A 30-day DIY social media plan if you are not ready to hire

You do not need an agency to start. Run this for a month first; it also makes you a better client later.

  1. Days 1 to 2: choose one platform, using the reach table as a tiebreaker.
  2. Day 3: fix the profile. Correct name, address, opening hours, the right link, and a bio saying what you do and where.
  3. Days 4 to 5: write four content pillars: the work, the people, useful advice, customer stories.
  4. Days 6 to 10: shoot in one batch. An hour on a phone in daylight gets a month of photos and clips.
  5. Days 11 to 12: write 12 captions, three per pillar, leading with the useful sentence.
  6. Days 13 to 14: schedule three posts a week using the platform’s own scheduler, not a paid tool.
  7. Days 15 to 30: reply to everything within one working day. This outperforms most content changes.
  8. Day 30: count what matters. Message enquiries, clicks to your contact page and anything a customer mentioned in person. Not followers.

If you are getting enquiries but cannot keep the pace, that is the moment to hire. If you got nothing, change the platform or the offer before paying for management. Social works best alongside the rest of your marketing, as in our guide to a digital marketing strategy for small businesses.

What should you do before spending on social at all?

Make sure the destination works. Our 2026 study of West Midlands small business websites found that 382 of the 1,867 sites we checked, or 20.5%, did not work at all, and social traffic sent to a broken page is wasted. For most local businesses, a proper local SEO setup and a steady flow of genuine Google reviews produce enquiries sooner and cheaper.

Frequently asked questions

How much does social media management cost in Birmingham per month?

Most Birmingham small businesses pay £200 to £600 a month for organic posting on one or two platforms, £600 to £1,500 for content-led management with original photography or video, and £1,500 or more for full management including paid social. These are typical market ranges, not a price list, and ad spend is separate.

Is a freelancer cheaper than a social media agency?

Usually yes, at £250 to £900 a month against £200 upwards for an agency, but you are buying one person’s time rather than a team, and cheap agency packages buy fewer posts and no original video. An agency makes more sense when you need photography, video, paid social and holiday cover.

Which social media platform is best for a small business in Birmingham?

For local services, trades, hospitality and retail, start with Facebook and Instagram, which Ofcom measured at 93% and 78% UK online adult reach in May 2025. For business-to-business and professional services, start with LinkedIn, at 38%. Do one or two properly rather than opening five you cannot maintain.

Should ad spend be included in a social media management fee?

No. The fee pays for people’s time and the spend goes to the platform, so quote and bill them separately, with the ad account in your own business name. Bundling them hides your real cost per enquiry.

Is it legal to buy followers or ask for reviews in exchange for a discount?

Buying followers is not a criminal offence but it breaches most platforms’ terms and damages your engagement rate. Reviews are different: since 6 April 2025, submitting or commissioning fake reviews, and publishing incentivised reviews without disclosing the incentive, are banned practices under UK consumer law.

How long before social media management produces enquiries?

There is no published benchmark. As a working estimate, visual local businesses on Facebook and Instagram see first message enquiries within four to eight weeks of consistent posting. On LinkedIn, three to six months is more realistic because the buying cycle is longer. Paid social can produce enquiries within days, but stops when you stop paying.

In one line

Pay for one or two platforms done properly, keep ownership of your accounts and your ad spend, and judge the work on enquiries rather than followers.
