10 Best Web Design Agencies in Birmingham (2026)

10 Best Web Design Agencies in Birmingham (2026)

The short answer: Our shortlist of web design agencies in Birmingham is DigitalCave, Kubix, eSterling, Opace, Clevercherry, Bowler Hat, Clear Design, Essential Logic, Jask Creative and Into the White. DigitalCave is our own studio. We checked every agency on its own website for a Birmingham base, a live portfolio and clear website design services. The right one depends on your platform and what your site has to do.

DigitalCave is our own studio, so we have put it first. The other nine are listed in no particular order, and none of them paid to be included.

How we chose the 10 agencies: a Birmingham base, a live portfolio and web design services, all checked on each agency's own website, and no paid placements

Key takeaways

  • Start with the job your website has to do: sell products, win enquiries, run a custom tool or launch a brand.
  • Online shops have specialists: Kubix works on Shopify, while Clear Design and Essential Logic build on Magento, Shopify and WooCommerce.
  • Several agencies pair web design with SEO (search engine optimisation) and PPC (pay-per-click advertising), which matters if the site has to bring in leads from Google.
  • Some also build web applications and custom software: Clevercherry, eSterling and Essential Logic all list this work.
  • Size can change the experience: in a smaller studio you are more likely to deal directly with the people doing the work.
  • Whoever you shortlist, test their live sites on your phone and get the scope, ownership and price in writing.

How we chose these agencies

We searched for web design agencies in Birmingham, then kept only those that passed three checks on their own website when we wrote this list:

  1. A Birmingham base you can verify. An address or office in Birmingham or a close suburb, shown on the agency’s own site.
  2. A live portfolio. Real projects or case studies published on the site.
  3. Clear web design services. A page that describes website design or build work, not only marketing.

We looked at more than 20 agencies before settling on these nine, and looked up the company behind each one on Companies House. We did not take payment from anyone listed, and no agency asked to be included.

We have not hired the other nine, so this is not a quality ranking: each entry describes what the agency says about itself.

1. DigitalCave

DigitalCave is a web design and digital marketing studio in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter, at 47 Jewel Court, 29 Legge Lane, B1 3LE. We were founded in 2013 and have no junior account managers: senior strategists do the work.

What we build. We build custom WordPress sites with hand-coded themes, so your team can edit pages without a heavy page builder, and Shopify stores for businesses that sell online.

Every build is designed for phones first, built to level AA of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) and launched with analytics and SEO foundations in place. Our page on web design in Birmingham sets out the process, from a discovery workshop to launch and aftercare.

Redesigns. If you already have a website, we keep your existing page addresses by default. Where the structure has to change, we map 301 redirects (permanent forwards from each old address to its new one) to protect the search rankings you already have.

How we price. Website builds run from £3,500 to £15,000+, depending on scope. Every project gets a fixed-price quote, there is no lock-in, and you own everything we build. Most projects take 6 to 10 weeks from kick-off to launch.

Our UK website cost guide explains what moves the build price, and our guide to website maintenance costs in the UK covers what you pay after launch.

Results. Our case studies include Brad Rollason Films, where a footage-first wedding film site went live in six weeks and showreel views rose by 240%. ISKCON Swindon, a community and events organisation, saw 180% more pages per visit and a 65% lower bounce rate (the share of visitors who leave after one page) with its new site.

Who we suit. Small and medium businesses that want a fast site their own team can update, and want to know exactly who is building it. We are not the right fit for enterprise app projects, or for anyone looking for a website for a few hundred pounds.

For a step-by-step method, read our guide on how to choose a web design company in Birmingham. If your current site is the problem, these signs your website needs a redesign help you choose between a refresh and a rebuild. Our WordPress, Shopify, Wix and Squarespace comparison covers the platform question.

6. Bowler Hat

Bowler Hat is a digital marketing agency at the Custard Factory in Digbeth that also designs and builds websites. How to choose between them

Choose on fit, not on position in a list. The ten web design agencies in Birmingham on this list differ most in the platforms they build on, the sectors they serve and what happens after launch.

  1. Name the job. Selling products points to an ecommerce specialist, winning enquiries to a team that pairs design with SEO, a portal or booking tool to a team that builds web applications, and launching a brand to a creative studio.
  2. Settle the platform early. If you already sell on Shopify, Magento or WordPress, shortlist agencies that work on it, unless you have already decided to move platform.
  3. Test their live work on your phone. Open three sites from each portfolio, then run them through PageSpeed Insights, Google’s free speed test.
  4. Check the company. If it is a limited company, look it up on Companies House, which shows its registered address, officers and filing history for free.
  5. Ask who builds it and who owns it. Get names, and make sure the domain, the website and your Google accounts end up in your business’s name.
  6. Compare written quotes for the same brief. Look at the three-year cost (build, hosting, maintenance and changes), not just the launch price.
  7. Walk away from ranking guarantees. Google’s own guidance says no one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google, and warns against agencies that email you out of the blue.

Our buyer’s guide on choosing a web design company in Birmingham turns these into eight checks you can run yourself, mostly with free tools.

Frequently asked questions

Which is the best web design agency in Birmingham?

No single agency is best for everyone; the right one is the agency whose platforms and past work match your project. On this list, Kubix and Clear Design focus on online shops, Bowler Hat on websites built to win leads from search, and Clevercherry and Essential Logic also build web applications. Shortlist two or three and compare their live work.

How much does a website from a Birmingham agency cost?

A business website from a small UK agency typically costs £2,500 to £7,500, according to our UK website cost guide, and online shops cost more. DigitalCave’s builds run from £3,500 to £15,000+. The final price depends on the size of the site, the platform and who writes the content, so compare written quotes for the same brief, including three years of hosting and maintenance.

Did any agency pay to be on this list?

No agency paid to be on this list. DigitalCave is our own studio, so we put it first and say so, and we chose the other nine by checking each agency’s own website for a Birmingham base, a live portfolio and clear web design services.

Do I need a web design agency based in Birmingham?

You do not need a Birmingham-based agency, but a local one makes workshops and face-to-face meetings easier. An agency elsewhere that passes the same checks is a better choice than a local one that does not, so choose on evidence first and postcode second.

Which Birmingham agencies build Shopify websites?

On this list, Kubix specialises in Shopify, Clear Design and Essential Logic build on Shopify as well as Magento and WooCommerce, and eSterling and Into the White both list Shopify among their platforms. DigitalCave also builds Shopify stores. Ask each agency for live Shopify stores you can test.

How long does it take an agency to build a website?

DigitalCave’s website projects usually take 6 to 10 weeks from kick-off to launch, and smaller brochure sites can launch in about 4 weeks. Timing depends mainly on the size of the site and how quickly the content is ready, and ecommerce and bespoke builds take longer, so ask every agency for a written timeline.
